Living Lab

UTEP researchers are partnering with La Nube STEAM Discovery Center and La Rodadora Espacio Interactivo to create a Living Lab! We are excited to build new connections between scientists, educators, and our community.

Our team includes experts in learning, language, and bilingualism. Families visiting La Nube will have the chance to talk with researchers, ask questions about child development, and even participate in studies. Children participating in studies will get to play short, fun games, and they can help us understand more about what they know and how they learn!

How do kids get ready to read?

To be able to read, children have to know which direction to move their eyes. We know that adults that know English and Spanish typically name things left-to-right based on how they read/write in their native language. We're curious to see if young children will do the same, even before they've learned how to read!

¿Cómo se preparan los niños para leer?

Para leer, los niños tienen que saber en qué dirección mover los ojos. Sabemos que los adultos que saben inglés y español suelen nombrar cosas de izquierda a derecha según cómo leen/escriben en su idioma nativo. Ahora queremos saber si los niños pequeños harán lo mismo, ¡incluso antes de que hayan aprendido a leer!

How Do Children Understand and Use Sentences?
We are conducting a study to learn more about how children understand and produce sentences in their language(s). We are interested in both children who speak only Spanish (monolinguals) and children who speak both Spanish and English (bilinguals), between the ages of 6 and 8.
During the study, children will play fun, language-based games that help us understand how they process sentences while speaking and listening. The results will help us learn more about how language develops in children who grow up with one or more languages.

¿Cómo entienden y usan las oraciones los niños?
Estamos realizando un estudio para aprender más sobre cómo los niños entienden y producen oraciones en su(s) idioma(s). Nos interesan tanto los niños que hablan solo español (monolingües) como los que hablan español e inglés (bilingües), entre los 6 y 8 años de edad.
Durante el estudio, los niños participarán en juegos divertidos relacionados con el lenguaje que nos ayudarán a entender cómo procesan las oraciones al hablar y escuchar. Los resultados nos permitirán aprender más sobre cómo se desarrolla el lenguaje en los niños que crecen con uno o más idiomas.
